The New York Yankees will have a shot at turning around their season, as they started off their season in a bit of a rut. Looking back at their April 16th game against the Rays, the Yanks second home stand didn't start off well. Going into that game, the team lost 4 out of 6 games against Tampa and since the season started, they didn't play good baseball against the Jays either.
As a matter of fact, besides almost sweeping the Baltimore Orioles, the Yanks haven't played a good brand of baseball to start the season. Looking at that April 16th start, it shows what the Yanks need to do with them offensively ranking 23rd in the American League going into that game. Then there is pitching issues to start the season, aside from Gerrit Cole and the Yankee bullpen, this team still has yet to see true production from the pitching staff.
Going into today's game, the Yankees are 5-10 on the season and is at the very bottom of the American League East division.
General manager Brian Cashman said this to media yesterday afternoon:
"We've had a lot of storms hit along the way, and change doesn't happen without a great deal of thought and reason....We’re not reactive. I don’t see us reacting to shake up the roster too quickly, and I don’t see us not believing in the staff that we have, or the players that we have, either.
That’s the message to our players: ‘We do believe in you. We know what you’re capable of. This is a bad stretch, and we’re going to get through this together.' ”
The Yanks have a lot of work ahead of them to make of ground in their division, because the Braves aren't coming into Yankees Stadium quietly this evening. While the Yanks have been struggling to start their season, the Atlanta team and other baseball organization have been doing impressive stuff. Carlos Rodón of the White Sox made history with a no-hitter. Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves put together a thrilling performance to get his team's season started on the right note by providing power with his bat and also providing on base production.
On Monday, Rodón and Acuña were recognized for their success, as they were named the American and National League Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet. The Yankees need to take a page out their competition's playbook, because the team needs to win games by capitalizing on key moments when their runners-in-scoring-position, especially when the team having pitching problems beyond Cole and their bullpen.
In this evening game, RHP Jameson Taillon will get the ball to start the game on the mound against Atlanta. The Yankees have to click offensively and defensively to back up Taillon, who is aiming to bounce back after he was knocked around for five runs and eight hits in his last outing against Toronto in 3 2/3 innings of work. That start marked Taillon's second start since returning from a 2019 Tommy John surgery.
The Braves will counter by sending RHP Charlie Morton to the mound to face the Yankee offense. Morton made a couple of taxing mistakes during a four-run third inning match against the Marlins on Wednesday. Fortunately for him, he was feeling his curveball, which he felt was good as it has been all year. In his past two outing, Morton has completed six innings.
We will have to wait and season if Yankees can spark a winning streak to start the Braves-Yankee series.
